Glazed Links & Walkways
Frameless glass links offer a modern yet subtle way to connect two buildings. They are, ideal for projects involving historical structures like barn conversions and Oast houses.
Double-glazed glass links create a functional passage between old and new while complying with current Regulations.
Based on the border of Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath, West Sussex, we offer a full survey, supply, and installation service throughout South East England.
We predominantly cover London, Sussex, and Surrey, but if you are a little further afield, please just let us know.
Glazed Links Specialists
Frameless glass links are a great way to link two buildings together in a modern yet unobtrusive way. They serve as a great solution for those looking to bring contemporary design to historic structures.
Commonly used in Barn Conversions and Oast Houses, where historic interest and conservation is of concern, a glazed link uses structural glass to create a habitable passage between new and old without detracting from the original intent of the building. This kind of design respects the historical significance of the structure while providing a functional and aesthetic walkway to another building.
Typically double glazed, structural glass links can integrate a host of features such as switchable privacy glass, heated glass, and solar PV glass. Using these technologies not only improves the energy efficiency of the building but can also add an extra layer of comfort and convenience for the occupants.

Linking Old to New
By using structural glass to form a link or walkway between two buildings, architects and builders can maintain the visual integrity of the historical building while introducing modern elements that comply with current standards.
A glazed link is ideal for projects where preserving the original charm of the building is important, but there is a need for a passage to link new and old constructions into one.
The implementation of frameless glass links in such context is typically accepted by Historic England and Conservation officers as a necessary addition to a historical structure to modernise and continue its use.
The Process
We will visit site to undertake a detailed survey, gathering the required information to enable us to produce drawings, as well as manufacture the glass link for your project. Due to the nature of old buildings, some can lean, some can be a bit wonky, and we will take all that into account and let you know how we plan to overcome any issues we find.
Before anything is put into manufacture, we will prepare a drawing for your review. We are happy to discuss any elements of this, and will implement your feedback, ensuring it is worked into the project in the best way possible.

Keeping you involved
We always issue our clients with detailed drawings before anything goes into manufacture. This ensures that you have the chance to check that we have understood your requirements correctly and allows you to review the design to make sure you are happy with the concept before anything goes into production.
All of our glazed links are, where necessary, compliant with all building regulations and U-values, and always encompass a laminated panel to the roof for safety.
Before the installation we will discuss with you any requirements that need to be completed prior to our installation taking place. This usually requires that the area is finished to the final structural opening, ready for our installation, and that any access or Health and Safety requirements discussed are in place.

FAQs
How do you ensure the glass link will fit?
We conduct a highly detailed site survey for every project. This includes collecting data, often with the aid of a laser scanner. This data includes the exact shape of the existing structure, whether it is plumb and level, any shapes and notches the glass is required to fit around and any other relevant details.
What are the main manufacturing limitations for Glazed Links?
- Typically double glazed, despite being a frameless design, you will always see the black spacer bar inside the edges of the glass units. This is commonplace and generally well accepted.
- The maximum size of the glass panels used in glass links are usually dictated by its total weight. The heavier the glass, the more lifting equipment required and therefore the greater the cost. We will discuss this with you at Quotation stage, as well as at Survey stage.
How is a Glass Link fixed?
Glass links can come in different shapes and sizes, but are typically three sided structures (roof, and two sides).
Where the glass abuts the existing building, it is set into a frame to hold it in place.
Where the glass walls meet the glass roof, we use a stepped edged detail on the glass units to interlock them together, forming a glass to glass joint set in place with structural silicone.
How do you install a Glazed Link?
In most instances we can work with the existing structure, but sometimes additional support is required. This may be in the form of an internal steel supporting structure, or in the form of glass fins and beams to support the panels correctly.
Do you supply and install?
Yes! All of our projects, including frameless glass links, include a detailed survey, bespoke design, fabrication, and installation from our dedicated and experienced team.
Do you use subcontractors?
No. All of our work is installed by our experienced in-house team and overseen by our installations manager.
Who is responsible for the measurements?
As we undertake a detailed survey for all of our projects, all of the measurements are our responsibility. We may ask for rough dimensions to provide a quotation, but don’t worry, we will always undertake a final survey when you place your order with us.
What sort of dimensional tolerances do you work to?
Because all of our glass is toughened, once manufactured it cannot be altered. Due to the frameless design, we work to very small dimensions tolerances of around +/-2mm.
Can I add extras to my glass link?
Yes! There are several options to increase thermal efficiency, privacy and energy efficiency within the glazed links. We can include tinted, opaque or switchable glass for privacy. For double glazed links we can offer thermally efficient glass, and glass which reduces the risk of the space overheating in the summer. Solar PV can also be integrated into the panels to provide energy generation, or heated glass used to heat the space in winter.
Are frameless glass links safe?
Our frameless glass link are fully compliant to all building regulations and we can always provide engineers calculations for building control if required.
Any roof or overhead panels are comprised of two panes of safety glass, laminated together to provide extra safety. Should a pane become damaged it will stay in place ensuring both safety for the occupants as well as ensuring the link remain secure from intruders.
